Community and Social Research in Peterborough Conference 2025
‘Catalysts for Change: Empowering Communities to Thrive
This year’s conference – titled, Catalysts for Change: Empowering Communities to Thrive – is encouraging submissions relating to: Community Spaces and Culture, Health, Education, and Youth and Social Justice.
ISLAH, the Institute for Social Policy, Leadership and Advancement of Humanity and University Centre Peterborough (UCP) have issued a call for abstracts to be presented at the forthcoming Community and Social Research in Peterborough Conference, on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
Researchers are required to submit a maximum 250-word abstract for a ten-minute presentation. The abstract should relate to grassroots work and social research within Peterborough or the Greater Peterborough area.
The deadline for submitted abstracts is Friday, May 2, 2025.
Participation in the conference can be from not-for-profit organisations, community organisations, commercial organisations, statutory organisations as well as individual researchers.
Sameena Aziz, Director at ISLAH, said: “This Conference is all about communities, enabling social movement and empowering people to make changes to help Peterborough to thrive.
“If you have experience of community work in Peterborough, we’d love to hear from you and about your work.
“We are also interested in hearing from researchers already working in academia, especially focussed on work in the grassroots communities.”
Presentations and research may be at any stage – from proposal to evaluation or impact assessment.
Abstracts will undergo a peer review process that will focus on the following criteria:
- How significant and applicable it is to Greater Peterborough
- Community focus and the approach to research
- Clear expression of ideas and communication
- Purpose, design, integrity and ethics

Dr Zahid Parvez
Key Note Speaker
The one-day conference will feature keynote speaker Dr Zahid Parvez, Rector Markfield Institute of Higher Education.
Dr Parvez has over 30 years experience in education, leadership training, and research, including a 20-year tenure as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton. His published works focus on e-democracy, problem-solving, and Islamic approaches to social change.

Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. There is no requirement for citations but these should be included in any presentation to be made on the day. In addition to your abstract, please submit a short (maximum 100 word) personal statement that covers the following:
- Your name and role (including organisation’s name if applicable)
- Your experience as a researche
- Your remit or overall research focus
- How complete the research project to be presented is, and where it fits within any larger project/ambition (if applicable)
Abstracts which have been submitted or recently presented at other meetings are eligible for presentation at the UCP/ISLAH Conference. Previous presentation of a paper does not prohibit the presentation of the material at this event.
The Conference Committee may require additional information from submitters prior to the decision to accept/reject; the decision of the Committee is final
Abstract acceptance by UCP/ISLAH should not be taken as endorsement of the validity or safety of research by either organisation
There is no limit on the number of abstract submissions per author, but an individual may appear as a presenting author only once during the Conference proceedings
Presentations may be made by individuals or by a group of individuals
Where an abstract is not selected for presentation, there may be an opportunity for a poster presentation on the same day
Decisions will be communicated to contributors by 21st May 2023 and confirmation of place will be required by 28th May 2023.
Authors affirm that their abstract/presentation content is original and that they have had substantial input into the research project
Neither abstract or presentation may contain matter that is defamatory, that infringes on proprietary, copyright or individual privacy, or is otherwise unlawful
Abstract submission implies an understanding that the authors will receive no remuneration from UCP/ISLAH for their participation
Authors/Presenters give UCP/ISLAH, their agents and representatives the right to use their names and likeness in promotional and other material published in relation to the event
Authors agree to UCP/ISLAH’s right to “fair use” in promoting and reviewing material before, during and after the event
Attendance is free to all delegates; we cannot cover any expenses incurred by any parties whether presenting or attending as an audience member
