Matthew Edgell, who graduated with a BSc in Sports Coaching and Physical Education at UCP, was announced as the winner of the 2023 Great British Bake Off.

Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood crowned Matthew as the 14th champion of the well-loved TV baking series. Despite initially labeling himself as an "underdog," Matthew claimed the title with his impressive buttercream three-tiered celebration cake showstopper, which Paul Hollywood praised as "absolutely delicious."

Speaking to Peterborough Telegraph, Matthew said, "I don’t know what to say, everyone said you should go on Bake Off and I thought it was a throwaway comment and never really listened to it. I never thought I would be on the show let alone win it! It’s difficult to put into words how grateful I am to have been part of this experience.

"Spending the summer baking in the tent is something I will never forget and it’s taught me so much about myself. I am so thankful to the other bakers for making this experience of a lifetime. The support, laughs and all of it."

Securing the title ahead of Josh Smalley and Dan Hunter, Matthew won despite initially ranking third in the lardy cake technical challenge. Nonetheless, he made a strong impression on the judges with his exceptional black forest and banoffee eclairs during the opening signature bake.

Matthew, who is now a PE and Science teacher at Hampton College, also plays for Stanground Sports in the Premier Division of the Peterborough League.

University Centre Peterborough would like to congratulate Matthew on this fantastic achievement and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
