Making Your Statement, Personal

What is a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is part of your UCAS application and is your opportunity to talk directly to the university. It is your chance to write about what you have achieved in all aspects of your life so far, to show why you would be the perfect student for their uni.

Your statement is written and should be treated like an essay but about yourself. There is a limit to how much you can include – this is 4,000 characters or about two sides of A4, so be concise and considered what you would like to include.

Preparation is key when writing your personal statement, research the course and university, attend open days and ask about expectations for personal statements. Map out the key aspects you want to include and think about how each part links together to create a cohesive picture of yourself. Use positive language and be proud of your achievements and experiences.

When constructing your personal statement, focus on these three key aspects: Why are you applying to this course? Why are you interested in this course? Why will you be a suitable student for the course? If you can relate all aspects of your writing to these points, you'll be in a good position to write a compelling statement.

Proofreading is essential, give yourself enough time to properly proof and ask others to read and review your statement as well. Get feedback from school or college staff and take their advice on how to upsell yourself and focus on course-specific details.

Personal Statement Prompts

This is about your skills, expertise, achievements, and experiences. Use the following questions to prompt you on what to include:

  • What excites you about this course?
  • What are you proud of?
  • What do you see yourself doing after university?
  • Do you have any relevant work experience?
  • How have your life experiences influenced your course decision?
  • How do your skills make you perfect for this course?
